The aim is to accelerate electrons externally injected in these wakefields. In AWAKE Run 1, electron bunches were accelerated up to 2 GeV in wakefields driven by high-energy proton bunches in 10 m of plasma. AWAKE Run 2 will deal with accelerating high-charge bunches of electrons (~50 GeV). So, detailed modeling is required, and this is only possible with excellent diagnostics.
