13:30 - 15:00 Weekly Seminar Damped Lyman-alpha absorption (DLA) systems as tracers of infalling gas School ASTRONOMY Galaxies grow by mergers and by accretion of gas from their surroundings. Models show that this infall of gas occurs through the filaments of the cosmic web. Most available observational evidence for the infalling gas are indirect evidence as direct observation of these infalling gas has proven to be very difficult. In our current project, we study neutral hydrogen clouds located very close to high redshift quasars. We provide some observational evidence which indicates that these neutral clouds are very likely the product of the interaction between infalling and outflowing gas. Maybe, this infalling gas is on its way to feed the supermassive ... 14:00 - 15:00 Weekly Seminar Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Group Graphene Plasmonics School PHYSICS Seminar Room (classroom A), Farmanieh Building, IPM ... 14:00 - 15:00 Weekly Seminar Graphene Plasmonics School NANO SCIENCES Graphene Plasmonics Graphene plasmon has attracted great attention as a viable tool for fast electrical manipulation of light. The prospects for applications to electro-optical modulation, optical sensing, quantum plasmonics, and light harvesting are further stimulated by the relatively low level of losses and high degree of spatial confinement that characterize these excitations compared with conventional plasmonic materials, alongside the large nonlinear response of graphene. In this talk, first, graphene properties, when it is interacting with electromagnetic waves, are considered. Then, the plasmonic guided mode of infi ... 15:00 - 16:00 Weekly Seminar Design and Fabrication of a 2-D Multi-Wire Proportional Counter for Soft X-Ray Energy and Spatial Resolution Measurement School PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS The Iranian Light Source Facility (ILSF) is a new 3 GeV third generation synchrotron radiation facility in Middle East, which at the time being is in its design stage. An important aspect for the scientific success of this new source will be the availability of well adapted detectors. Position-sensitive X-ray detectors have played an important role in synchrotron radiation X-ray experiments for many years and are still in use. In this work, we introduce a 2-D position sensitive gas detector based on a multiwire proportional chamber which designed and fabricated at ILSF within a collaborat ... 16:00 - 17:00 Mathematics Colloquium Traffic Jams: A Mathematical Problem? School MATHEMATICS Traffic jams are nightmares in large cities. I would like to explain some mathematical ideas around the global dynamics of vehicles in complex networks. I will first show some paradoxes, like for instance the fact that it is sometimes a good idea to close a street in order to improve the traffic. Then I will describe some theorems which may not solve the problem, but which at least provide a better understanding of the phenomenon. ... 16:30 - 18:00 Physics Colloquium Local temperature Ansatz: A novel quantum entanglement based approach for solving strongly correlated systems School PHYSICS Lecture room C, Farmanieh building ... |
