Emergence of strong ferromagnetism in silicene nanoflakes via patterned hydrogenation and its potential application in spintronics

Considerably different properties emerge in nanomaterials as a result of quantum confinement and edge effects. In this study, the electronic and magnetic properties of quasi zero-dimensional silicene nanoflakes (SiNFs) are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. While the zigzag-edged hexagonal SiNFs exhibit non-magnetic semiconducting character, the zigzag-edged triangular SiNFs are magnetic semiconductors. One effective method of harnessing the properties of silicene is ...

    Problem-based Learning

    School
    MATHEMATICS

In this talk, I will present a brief overview of Problem-based Learning (PBL) and discuss the possibility of adopting this method for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. We have been recently awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to implement and examine this approach. Some examples are provided. ...

Mechanical and Biochemical Micromanipulation of Individual Suspended Cells Probed with Optical Tweezers

Cells communicate with their environment through biochemical and mechanical interactions. They can respond to stimuli by undergoing shape- and, in some situations, volume changes. Key determinants of the mechanical response of a cell are the viscoelastic properties of the actomyosin cortex, effective surface tension, and osmotic pressure. It is challenging to measure the mechanical response of cells while changing environmental conditions. We here demonstrate the use of a novel microfluidic device with integrated hydrogel ...

    MATHEMATICS

In this talk quasi contact metric manifolds are considered. Quasi contact metric manifolds are odd dimensional analogues of quasi Kahler manifolds, they appear on hypersurfaces of quasi Kahler manifolds. ...

Hydrodynamic Frames in a Chiral System

    School
    PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Hydrodynamics describes the low-energy long-wavelength limit in physical systems. The constitutive relations in hydrodynamics are usually specified in a derivative expansion. Beyond the zero order in derivative expansion, however, the hydro fields like velocity are not uniquely defined. Choosing the fluid velocity is referred to as the choice of frame in hydrodynamics. In this talk I will try to explain how different hydrodynamic frames are transformed to each other in a chiral fluid. The obtained transformations then make us be able to reproduce the well-known results on the transport coefficients, collective excitations and drag force in a ...

Fresnel Diffractometry and its Applications in Optical Metrology

Fresnel diffraction is an approximation used for propagation of electromagnetic fields between two planes separated by finite distance in space. Although, this formulation dates back to the 18th Century, it serves more as a theoretical formalism to explain optical phenomena, and few applications such as the Fresnel zone plates have been emerged so far. However, In the past decade or so Fresnel diffraction has been used as a quantitative and precise optical metrology technique as well. Fortunately, many of the important developments in this field have taken pl ...
