Finite-temperature properties of strongly correlated systems via variational Monte Carlo

Variational methods are a common approach for computing properties of ground states but have not yet found analogous success in finite-temperature calculations. In this work, we develop a new variational finite-temperature algorithm (VAFT), which combines ideas from minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS), variational Monte Carlo (VMC) optimization, and path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC). This allows us to define an implicit variational density matrix to estimate finite-temperature properties in two and three dimensions. We benc ...

Bubble nucleation during inflation

School
ASTRONOMY

In this talk, we study the gravitational effects of a bubble, formed during inflation via the tunneling of a spectator field from the false vacuum of its potential to its true vacuum, on the inflaton fluctuations and the corrections in the primordial curvature perturbations power spectrum. We assume the observable CMB sphere lies initially outside of the bubble and while the bubble wall expands, the CMB scales come into the bubble. In this setup, the modes which leave the horizon during inflation at the time when the bubble wall collides with the observable CMB sphere are affected the most. We show that the bubble wall induces non-trivial ani ...

Variational wave functions for the Distorted Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Low-dimensional quantum spin systems display intriguing ground state properties, which may have important consequences for the existence of fractionalized excitations or the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity. In this talk we consider the material in two dimensions which they can be good candidates of existence spin liquid phases. Among various materials that show promising lowtemperature behaviors, the family of organic charge transfer salts k-(ET)2X (with the anisotropic triangular lattice) represent a very important candid ...

Dark Matter Beyond the WIMP Era

PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Dark Matter is one of the key ingredients of the Standard Model of Cosmology. The existence of dark matter has been established from numerous astrophysical and cosmological observations, but the nature of its interaction still remains enigmatic. Assuming dark matter is a single particle thermal relic, a canonical prediction of its interaction cross-section with the SM particles has been developed. In particular, a dark matter that is weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) can naturally produce the observed relic abundance. However, after more than a generation of experiments, no unambiguous signature of dark matter is detected, and most o ...
