Precision medicine in oncology: still not ready for prime time?

Abstract:
Although many advances have been made in detecting, diagnosis and treating cancer, chemotherapy (the primary means of treatment) is only effective in 25% of those treated. This failure in oncology somewhat relies on trial-and-error or one-size-fits-all approach in which everyone gets the same therapeutic regimen, regardless of genotype. Therefore, treatment strategy in oncology is shifting to precision medicine. Precision medicine is described as the tailoring of medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. In this regard, physicians are now studying cellular and molecular characteristics and genes to provide customized treatment to their patients. The goal of this paradigm is to provide the right dose of the right drug for the right patient at the right time. It seems that a new standard of patient care is going to define, making precision cancer therapy standard over the next years. In this talk, three of the strategies of precision medicine including tumoroids, mouse avatars, and biomarker profiling will be discussed.
